Is most of the fine art world more about personal branding rather than the art itself? In other words, is the monetary value of the art rooted more from the artist's marketing/branding/entourage, rather than the art itself?
I think artists make art out of the absolute need to release their personal expressions. The most successful artist in my opinion is the artist that is not focused on the monetary value of their art, but rather that focuses energy on creating and expressing themselves. Many artists think making money would make their art better, but if they were creating art for money- then they have lost the true purpose of art to begin with. Plus there is so much pressure to create when it is your actual income that it again takes away from the creative process. As an artist, I personally don’t care if anyone likes my art, of course it is a compliment if they do, and it’s an even bigger compliment when someone is purchasing my art. That is if I am selling it. I don’t think anyone should look at art as a brand, but rather evaluate deeply who you are as a person and really own it. That is where true authentic power comes from and you cannot compete with it because it is not competing with you.
